Upton Beginners Regatta

Upton Beginners Regatta is a fun, relaxed introduction to regatta racing for adults who have learned to row in the previous 12 months.  Its round robin format ensures all crews have multiple races, increasing confidence and skill as the day progresses.  With a welcoming atmosphere it’s the perfect first opportunity to experience the thrill of side by side racing in a supportive environment. 

Competition Overview

  • Private match – entry by invitation only.
  • Entries limited to a maximum of ten crews.
  • Side by side racing on the River Severn between sculling crews in matched stable quads (boats and blades provided).
  • 350m sprint downstream.
  • Each crew guaranteed four races, and up to a maximum of five or six, depending on the number of entries.
  • Competing rowers must be over 18 on the day of the race and have learned to row since 7th September 2025. Previous sweep rowers who have learned to scull in that period are NOT eligible to compete.
  • Where competing crews have unequal numbers of men and women, the crew with more women will be given a handicap start of two seconds for every extra female.
  • Crews to race in tops of matching colour.
  • Experienced coxes are preferred.  Coxes can be under 18, but if so the competing club must take full responsibility for them.
  • Provisional timings are as follows: crew registration from 09:45, the safety briefing for all competitors at 10:30, and the first race at 11:00. Times may be made slightly earlier nearer to the event, if we achieve our maximum of 10 entries.
  • British Rowing membership not needed.
  • Section 5-2 of the Rules of Racing apply.

Entries

  • Entry fee £48 per crew (£12 per seat).  Payment by bank transfer to Upton Rowing Club - details to follow.
  • Entries will close and payment must be made by midnight on Saturday 29th August 2026. Entries may close early if the maximum number of crews is reached before the advertised closing date.
  • The draw will take place at midday on Sunday 30th August 2026.  Only paid-up crews will be included in the draw.
  • All competitors, including coxes, will be required to complete an Upton Rowing Club Day Membership form prior to the event.  Combined with the entry fee this completed form gives competitors a one day guest membership of Upton Rowing Club and the insurance cover which goes with URC membership.
