The spirit of 1835: a legendary challenge

Rewind to August 1835, when Upton Rowing Club boldly challenged Gloucester to an epic 61-mile race on the Severn. Despite being outnumbered with only four available rowers against Gloucester's eight, our crew demonstrated extraordinary stamina, finishing just 20 minutes behind the Gloucester eight, in a time of 11 hours 50 minutes. As the media of the day reported, "Thus proving that however inferior they may be to the Gloucester Union Club in skill, they were quite equal to then in stamina." This early feat encapsulates our club's enduring spirit.

Rebirth and growth: a community effort

The current Upton Rowing Club began its journey with an inaugural meeting in August 1995. With immense support from Upton Marina and the generosity of other clubs, who donated or sold old boats like the beloved 'Derby and Joan' (a double scull from Derby RC, rowed for 18 years), we rapidly expanded our fleet. A pivotal moment came in 1997 when Malvern Hills DC, through its 'Malvern Millions' fund, granted us funding for a new steel-framed boathouse, crucial for our continued development and fleet expansion.
