Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire

Learn-to-Row & Return to Row Courses

Our Learn-to-Row (L2R) course starts around Easter each year on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with new trainees being accepted for the first 4-6 weeks only. Concurrently, we also take any 'non-member' rower (Return-2-Row) who has been on a learn-to-row course in any ARA-affiliated club (for not more than one year) and wishes to fast-track to competence and membership at Upton. These R2R groups also meet on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings from Easter.

In 2009, the L2R & R2R courses will not be diluted in June as they have been in previous years by people coming from the Pubs, Clubs & Firms entry. Instead, we are planning a novel regatta on Sunday the 13th September 2009. Not everyone has to take part. Invitation squads from local clubs will join our full members for friendly but competitive racing. The Regatta will be run from the King's Head pub.

During their training, all members of the squads will first be trained in sculling and the rudimentary theory and practice of coxing. Having attained competence in sculling we will start you on rowing as soon as we have four or five people to form a new group. We are also going to try and stream people so you may hope to be, literally, in the same boat as other people around you!

We also run capsize drills to provide all members with practical experience of what to do in the event of capsize. We aim to get all squad members through to a rowing test by the end of September so that they can become full members of the Club. Application can be made to the L2R and R2R via the Membership Secretary or Chairman. Everyone must be able to swim 100m in still water (and in light clothing).
